Combating Predatory Lending
As First Nations works to fulfill its mission "to restore Native control and culturally-compatible stewardship of the assets they own... for ensuring the long-term vitality of Native communities," we are convinced that Native people require positive opportunities to build financial education skills and attain assets like homes, businesses, and education. These positive opportunities can be undermined or completely eliminated if policy makers (at the tribal, federal, and state level) do not address the insidiously negative behavior of predatory lenders. First Nations' Director of Policy, Peter Morris, joined New Mexico State Senator, Leonard Tsosie, in March 2006 to discuss the impact of predatory lending in Native communities on nationally renowned Native talk show "Native America Calling".
