Urge Action on Grand Canyon Heritage Monument

Urge President Obama to Proclaim the Greater Grand Canyon Heritage National Monument

The Grand Canyon Trust and First Nations Development Institute are urging their constituents to ask President Obama to take action to proclaim the Greater Grand Canyon Heritage National Monument.

The Navajo Nation, the Havasupai and other tribes are in support of the Greater Grand Canyon Heritage National Monument Act, a bill that was introduced earlier this year by Arizona Congressman Raúl Grijalva and tribal leaders. The bill supports the protection of tribal lands, water resources and sacred sites around the Grand Canyon, and bans new uranium mining claims.  It will still allow hunting, grazing, recreation and other uses.

With the current Congressional gridlock, it’s highly unlikely that the bill will pass. However, President Obama can proclaim the national monument under his existing legal authority. Please consider supporting this very important initiative by asking President Obama to use his authority to protect the Grand Canyon’s sacred waters.
