2012 Update on the Native American Programs Act of 1974
On Sept. 13, 2012, Senator Tim Johnson (D-SD) introduced Senate Bill 3546, a measure to amend the Native American Programs Act of 1974 to reauthorize a provision to ensure the survival and continuing vitality of Native American languages.
Under the amendment, Section 816(e) of the Native American Programs Act of 1974 (42 U.S.C. 2992d(e)) the years of ‘2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2012’ will be removed from the Act and replaced with ‘2013 through 2017.’
The bill was assigned to a Senate Committee on Indian Affairs on Sept. 13, 2012, for consideration before possibly sending it on to the House or Senate.
