Antonio J. Garcia joined First Nations Development Institute in November 2021 as a program assistant. In April 2022, he began working as a Program Associate for the Strengthening Tribal and Community Institutions Program. In this role, Antonio helps to facilitate the development and execution of the program’s diverse projects relating to revitalizing Native communities and integrating social empowerment and economic strategies.

Before joining First Nations, Antonio worked in multiple community nonprofits and Native-serving organizations and programs. With a background in grassroots community organizing, activism, and social justice work, Antonio carries on a tradition of service as he comes from a family of active community leaders, social movement participants, and public servants. He continues to work on addressing inequities in the public education system and on issues surrounding Indigenous human, land, water, and resource rights in his personal time.

Originally from Denver, Colorado, Antonio currently attends the University of New Mexico, studying Native American studies focusing on leadership and building Native nations. He enjoys attending ceremony, learning about traditional medicine, spending time with family, and gardening.
