Program Officer - California Tribal Fund

Samala Chumash

Sabine (Samala Chumash) joined First Nations in 2023 as a Program Officer for the California Tribal Fund. Before this role, she served as the Tribal Affairs Program Manager for California State Parks, where she facilitated compliance with federal and state policies and laws regarding tribal consultation, collaboration, and repatriation. She has served Native communities in California in various roles, including working at the California Consortium for Urban Indian Health and serving on the board of Intertribal Friendship House. She has worked as a consultant for many Native nonprofit organizations, providing policy analysis, program evaluation, and strategy development services.

Sabine has a Master of Public Policy degree from Mills College, where she focused on addressing anti-Indian bias in California public schools. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Public Policy with a Health Focus and a minor in Economics also from Mills College. Her work with her grandfather demonstrating the importance of Chumash knowledge has fueled her passion for all the good that can come from Native stewardship of ancestral lands and waters. Outside of work, Sabine enjoys spending time with her loved ones and nature.
