Advancing Native American Economies and Workforce Development in the Technology Industry

Tribal Sovereignty extends beyond land and political authority to something less tangible, but equally vital: data, technology, and the infrastructure that shapes contemporary knowledge systems. As tribal communities increasingly engage with digital technologies, questions of who controls information, how knowledge is governed, and who benefits from data have become central to self-determination.

This report explores three initiatives that represent different facets of advancing Tribal Sovereignty through technology, education, and data governance. The Southwestern Indian Polytechnic Institute’s partnership with Petroglyph National Monument creates pathways for Native students to engage with ancestral heritage, while building careers in federal land management and cultural preservation. The National Tribal GIS Center tackles the foundational challenge of data governance, empowering tribal nations to write their own rules for managing geospatial information, while confronting the humanitarian crisis of Missing and Murdered Indigenous People. IndigiGenius reimagines technology education itself, demonstrating that Indigenous languages, cultural protocols, and traditional knowledge are not obstacles to technological excellence, but wellsprings of innovation.
