The ultimate purpose of the "Weshki Niigaaniijig" project is: 1) Increase leadership and role-model learning opportunities for tribal youth; 2) Retain and Utilize tribal youth interested in preserving natural resources in teaching traditional Anishinaabe harvesting activities to other youth; and 3) Leverage local tribal elders as mentors for tribal youth.

The ultimate purpose of the "Waatebagaa" project is to 1) increase GLIFWC tribal youth knowledge and interest in treaty-reserved natural resources, establishing a new generation of tribal leaders to protect and preserve natural resources in the ceded territory; 2) increase tribal elder and tribal youth interactions by providing intergenerational learning opportunities focused on traditional Anishinaabe autumn activities which will result in retaining knowledge of traditional harvesting/processing methods; 3) leverage local tribal elders to provide positive role models for older tribal youth interesting in becoming Junior Counselors GLIFWC's summer "Camp Onji-Akiing (From the Earth)".

Description

The ultimate purpose is to 1) strengthen local, tribal food systems and increase tribal control by increasing access to traditional Anishinaabe food knowledge and tribal wild rice harvesters for all 11 GLIFWC member tribes through community education/outreach during community events and tribal youth programs. 2) Create relationships between tribal youth/community Programs and Harvesters increasing access to and knowledge of wild rice, and the interrelationships of wild rice and Anishinaabe culture. 3) Support developing entrepreneurially-related food ventures and contribute to economic growth by creating tools and strengthening networking skills to leverage opportunities for Harvesters created through participation within the community.
