Members of First Nations Stewarding Native Lands and Native Agriculture and Food Systems Investments teams were fortunate to visit the Pueblo of Jemez this week for a day of knowledge sharing and relationship building. This visit provided an opportunity for Natural Resources Department staff to give updates about the important work they lead in managing, monitoring, and protecting lands and resources important to the People of Jemez. Up until last week, the Natural Resources Department staff stewarded approximately 89,000 acres of land. That changed on October 8 after the tribe acquired 1,100 acres of land between Jemez Springs and Cuba. Read more about the land acquisition here. Clarice Madalena (Pueblo of Jemez), Natural Resources Director said, “the Natural Resources Department staff are excited to restore tribal management of these ancestral lands.”
The Pueblo of Jemez is a longstanding partner of the Stewarding Native Lands program and over the years has received support to advance their rangeland management efforts, increase water availability to improve community and ecosystem health, and build organizational capacity for forestry restoration. You can learn more about the Pueblo’s water management strategies in First Nations’ Water Monitoring Guide for Native Producers.
Ku’dza’a to the Natural Resources Department for spending the day with us!
