Last week in Denver, First Nations hosted six Advancing Tribal Conservation Easements community partners at a convening to discuss conservation easements and equivalent opportunities and limitations: Barbareño/Ventureño Band of Mission Indians, Igiugig Village, Kashia Band of Pomo Indians, Molokai Heritage Trust, Rappahannock Tribe, and the Wind River Tribal Buffalo Initiative. Sessions and discussions focused on the spectrum of land protection mechanisms; restrictions, assumptions, and liabilities associated with conservation easements and equivalents; endowment structuring and funding strategies; and ways to align legal frameworks and governance structures that upholds Tribal Sovereignty.

In the final webinar in our series, “Advancing Tribal Conservation Easements Cohort Learnings,” the six community partners share how they are leading efforts to identify methods and best practices for realigning conservation easements to ultimately protect their homelands, cultural resources, and lifeways.
