The Hopi School, Inc.

This grant will support The Hopi School's mission and efforts to preserve and promote traditional Native arts and cultural assets, knowledge systems, and lifeways in your community for the benefit of future generations as well as increase organizational sustainability.

This project will enable Hopitutuqaiki's (The Hopi School, Inc.) to increase their capacity to continue preserving and advancing traditional Native arts through their programming focused on supporting artists and intergenerational sharing of artistic skills and knowledge, as well as, increase Hopitutuqaik's organizational sustainability.

Hopitutuqaiki will provide a year-round Hopi language immersion experience for 3-4 year-olds and a Hopi language and culture experience for older students and adults involving traditional and non-traditional art projects and panel discussions of cultural aspects of cultural life. Students from 3 years old through elders will be served on the Hopi Reservation in Northeast Arizona. Some activities may be videoed or streamed to enable Hopi living in other areas to attend.

This project will increase the number of Hopi who have skills of endangered arts: Hopi Textiles, Basket Weaving and Moccasin Making. It will utilize traditional mentorship by Elders to youth; create a model for Indigenous arts programs; and leverage future support for a year-long arts and language immersion school.

The purpose of the training is to learn what other Native arts and arts/education organizations are doing and how they are funded. Those attending will network with such organizations and learn new ideas and techniques to bring back to the Hopitutuqaiki Board.

This project will allow The Hopi School to provide 1) mentorship to artists in two endangered Hopi art areas, 2) strategic planning and board training to move the school from an occasional arts program to a year-around arts-magnet school, 3) an audit and fiscal development to support expansion.

The ultimate purpose of these four classes is to: 1) increase the number of people who can produce needed ceremonial regalia while retaining Hopi language and culture. During the time students are producing the craft items, the related/associated language and culture will be used or discussed. 2) Increase the ability of children and their parents to use Hopi language. It is anticipated that the Hopi language immersion process in the preschool will leverage increased use of Hopi language by their parents.

The ultimate purpose of the project is twofold: retain the Hopi language and create a new cadre of weavers to retain the cultural weaving practices of the Hopi people. It has been documented that the use of Hopi language and weaving as a cultural activity are both in decline. The project seeks to increase the number of speakers and weavers to carry on the cultural identity and tradition. The project can also leverage the personal income of the weavers by teaching them an art practice that is in demand and can be traded or sold to others.
