Fort Belknap Indian Community

This project focuses on growing program staff capacity, increasing community education, and developing construction plans on a buffalo program office. This project advances tribal food sovereignty and grassland stewardship within the Fort Belknap Indian Reservation.

This project will observe buffalo behavior through a lens of traditional knowledge. Findings will guide development of culturally informed, low-stress buffalo management practices, operational effectiveness, and long-term stewardship consistent with community values.

This project will advance buffalo restoration on tribal lands and contribute to the healthy function of biodiversity of grasslands and Native food systems by growing program staff capacity to restore buffalo, supporting youth summer programming, and developing a tribal buffalo program management plan. The Fort Belknap Buffalo program will create opportunities for youth to participate in summer reseeding and fencing efforts.

The project will increase participation in medicinal plant garden development and asset-maintenance. By leveraging existing resources, the medicinal garden can establish a broader scope and physical environment to better sustain the on-going learning by youth in our communities, in partnership with the knowledge and wisdom of local elders.

Grants support will increase education related to nutrition education for food distribution on Indian reservation (FDPIR) recipients.
