Kalispel Tribe of Indians

The ultimate purpose is to 1)Utilize existing federal legislation to develop and execute an agreement between the USFS and the Kalispel Tribe which authorizes the Kalispel Tribe to increase their participation in the stewardship of their aboriginal lands. This Grant will give the Tribe the capacity to leverage other resources and help us achieve our desired conservation outcomes.

To create a durable long-term co-management/co-stewardship agreement with the US Forest Service allowing for tribally based objectives and outcomes to be implemented on FS System lands. This would include increasing the pace and scale of restoration and conservation-based projects on Colville NF lands.

This project will increase the Tribe's ability to process and distribute meat within the community while creating opportunities for Tribal Members to receive training and education in a skilled trade.

This project will create a friendly and accessible environment where the public can learn about the benefits of good forest stewardship. Often times it is difficult for the untrained eye to discern a healthy forest from a sick forest. This interpretive signage will help us tell that story.

General operating support for Native food programs

The ultimate purpose of our project is to 1) increase food security of the community, and to 2) develop a community system to provide access to fresh, healthy foods. This project will support the families, youth and elder gardening projects within the community by expanding on existing gardens, and creating new family gardens. As a follow-up, interested gardeners will receive encouragement and guidance to expand to market gardening, providing extra family income and filling a need for local produce.
