People’s Food Sovereignty Program

Program Opportunity Statement (Recommended 300 words or less) Peoples Food Sovereignty Program was created through the need requests of traditional foods and medicines of the local tribal community living on the Flathead Reservation. There are approximately 6800 CSKT Tribal members living on the reservation, we support 1500 of those members and a grey area of 65+ other federally recognized tribal households on the reservation. We have implemented different programs to meet the needs of these community households and have expanded our capacity and improved efficiency each year. We are working to create a farm to further the capacity and resources of our program.

This funding will assist in our foundational development. We have created two annual programs that we provided to the Flathead Reservation tribal community. This assistance would provide funding that would attribute to the increasing need to house our current programs.

This program has been created to ensure the protection, conservation, and access of traditional cultural resources of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes (CSKT). By utilizing traditional ecological knowledge and providing regular distributions, we are revamping the traditional food systems, tribal values, and cultures of the Flathead Reservation.

This project will utilize traditional knowledge behind the preservation of food through dehydration and provide beneficial data to sustain and conserve financial resources and space, as well as providing healthier meal options for health and wellness and prolonging the shelf life of our program's food resources.

To establish a conservation program to identify potential Chronic Wasting Disease and other diseases found in large game herds found on the Flathead Reservation. This program will utilize the excising mutual relationship between Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribal Hunters and reservation farms and ranches.
