This Climate Initiative project provides support to Tribes and Native communities across the United States that are building pathways toward a renewable energy future. Renewable energy is necessary for Tribes to achieve energy security and independence, and it delivers direct benefits to the local economy. With greater support, Tribes are developing strategic energy plans, advancing their workforce, and strengthening renewable energy infrastructure. Examples of work supported by this project include:
- Conducting renewable energy feasibility assessments
- Creating transition plans for off-grid or grid-connected renewable or hybrid microgrids
- Trainings to building local workforce capacity
- Grow funding networks to bridge financial gaps
- Increasing tribal and Native community representation on rural cooperative boards
This project also convenes a working group comprised of both Native-led and Native-serving organizations that advocate for greater investments and policies that benefit Tribes and Native communities. Collectively, this Tribal Renewable Energy Working Group is helping improve access to vital resources for renewable energy projects and create resources to educate and inform Tribes and Native communities about renewable energy opportunities. Learn more about the Tribal Renewable Energy Working Group in First Nations’ Increasing Renewable Energy report.
