Increasing Tribal Renewable Energy

2025

In September 2024, First Nations convened eight tribal-serving organizations and programs committed to advancing renewable energy across Indian Country. This gathering, facilitated by Sovereign Energy, included representatives from 7Skyline, Alliance for Tribal Clean Energy, First Nations, Native Renewables, Oweesta Corporation, Red Cloud Renewable, Sovereign Energy, and the Tribal Energy Alternatives.

This report synthesizes the desired outcomes of these collaborative efforts, emphasizing the promotion of renewable energy education, investment, and advocacy to increase tribal participation in renewable energy opportunities. It highlights barriers and recommendations, as well as effective models and best practices that can shape tribal and Native community participation in renewable energy opportunities. The report includes a Network of Support list for Tribes navigating renewable energy planning and development. It also highlights information for those seeking to initiate or advance similar discussions; engage in political advocacy; and navigate municipal, state, and federal processes to further tribal renewable energy access and opportunities at local, regional, and national levels.
