Keres Children's Learning Center - 10th Annual Native Language Symposium

The ultimate purpose of this project “Serving the Whole Child” is to provide a strong language immersion environment in which Cochiti children have the ability to honor their heritage by using a comprehensive cultural and academic curriculum that focuses on both the student’s academic success and supports their Keres fluency.

General Operating Support

This project will enable our organization to retain our outdoor classroom which will continue to provide our children and community with methods to expand opportunities for intergenerational exchange of Keres in agricultural, historical, traditional, contemporary, and formal contexts to strengthen people’s use of Keres and stimulate community-level, cross-generational Keres fluency.

KCLC will utilize and increase its Primary (3–6-year-olds), Elementary (6-9-year-olds), and Adolescent Erdkinder (12-18-year-olds) classroom’s capacity by developing teachers’ skills to be more consistent in their use of best language immersion and Montessori practices to better nurture and revitalize the Keres language, culture and traditions.

Our project will further expand our resources and materials for KCLC’s newly developed yearlong map, which will focus on animals through our Language and Culture curriculum, using an intergenerational approach that supports our students’ and families’ language and culture. To assist each child in Keres language development, KCLC will provide our 22 children (ages 0–18) learning opportunities about animals in the following developmental domains: Physical Spiritual Social Intellectual Emotional Linguistic Grace and Courtesy

COVID-19 Response

Support the Keres Children’s Learning Center’s 2021 fundraising event, Get Your Coffee Ready Virtual Coffee Chat Series, that will showcase Indigenous professionals.

This project will leverage the ability to utilize language learning resources and increase community access to learning the Keres language/ways of knowing. This project will also create an opportunity for Indigenous children to plan and participate in a Food Sovereignty conference where they will learn more about native foods.

KCLC will retain and leverage its Primary (2.5–6-year-olds) and Elementary (6-12 year olds) Keres language classrooms through best practices of language immersion and Montessori pedagogy to invigorate Cochiti Keres language/culture.

This project will increase KCLC's demonstrable commitment to our health, wellness, food, and nutrition policies and our Guiding Principles around food by raising community awareness through a survey, through individual family consultations with KCLC's Nutrition Point Person, and by expanding and improving the healthy foods we serve.

The ultimate purpose is to increase the number of youth and young adults (parents) who speak our language. We want to retain the participation of the Elders that we have cultivated through our Administration for Native Americans (ANA) curriculum development grant these last two years and leverage the Elders' renewed enthusiasm for revitalizing Keres along with the guidance and ideas they already contributed through the ANA grant to increase their direct involvement with KCLC students. We are utilizing the strengths of different generations in an intergenerational approach to teach our youth our language so that they will retain it.

The ultimate purpose of our project is 1) to maintain and revitalize our Cochiti Keres Language so that it may be actively utilized in the daily/ceremonial lives of our people and protect our worldview, 2) to increase and re-engage the participation of the grandparent and parent generations with the efforts targeted at the youth generation so that we can maintain our Cochiti Keres language, and finally, to create a group of speakers, the children attending KCLC, who will have the peer support, support of their families and know that they will be spoken to in Keres when they go home.
