Recently published research confirms that around the world, non-forest ecosystems, including grasslands, are being converted for agricultural purposes at nearly four times the rate of forests, making tribal efforts to protect these culturally and ecologically important ecosystems vital.
Leading efforts to uplift and sustain traditional knowledge and the health of their lands and relatives through Native-led stewardship is First Nations’ Promoting Tribal Co-Stewardship for Grasslands Health community partner, Sisseton Wahpeton Oyate. The tribe is restoring flat rangeland into native tallgrass prairie by engaging youth, collecting and distributing seeds, and removing invasive species. Sharing this week at the 2026 Native American Fish and Wildlife Society Annual National Conference, Charlene Miller and Xavier Donnell said these efforts are ensuring the long-term health of their ecosystem and community.
